Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma condemns the Congress for a violent incident during a BJP rally in Samaguri, accusing the party of resorting to fear tactics to retain its vote bank.
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly condemned a violent incident during a BJP rally in Samaguri, where MLA Jitu Goswami was injured in a shooting attack. Sarma accused the Congress of orchestrating the violence, claiming that the opposition party was resorting to such tactics in a desperate bid to hold onto its voter base ahead of the by-elections.
Taking to social media, Sarma expressed outrage over the attack and sharply criticized the Congress party for its actions. He pointed out the hypocrisy of a party that often boasts about upholding the Constitution, yet engages in violence to intimidate political opponents. “This is the same Congress that proudly holds up the Constitution for the cameras, yet resorts to violence under cover of darkness to intimidate our karyakartas,” Sarma said.
The CM also questioned the party’s motivations, suggesting that their actions were driven not only by a fear of losing the election but also by an overwhelming desire to maintain their traditional vote bank. Sarma remarked, “The real question is, why has Congress stooped to such depths in this by-election? It’s not just fear of defeat, but the desperation to hold on to their core vote bank that drives them to such extremes.”
Sarma reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the democratic process in Assam, stating that justice would prevail and that such acts of violence would not be tolerated. “We will not allow anyone to sabotage or undermine our democratic process,” he asserted.
The incident occurred on the evening of November 9, as a BJP rally was moving from Magurmari to Latani in Samaguri, a region in Assam’s Barpeta district. The rally, which featured prominent BJP leaders including Jitu Goswami and Suresh Borah, was disrupted when gunfire rang out from unknown assailants. Several individuals were injured in the shooting, and local authorities quickly responded, launching an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further unrest.
The attack has sparked a fierce political debate, with both BJP and Congress accusing each other of stoking violence ahead of the by-elections. While police have been working to determine the identities of those responsible, the incident has raised concerns about the potential for further disturbances in the lead-up to the polls.
