The Ministry of Home Affairs deploys 20 additional CAPF companies to Manipur to curb escalating violence, following a deadly attack on a police station and rising ethnic unrest in the region.
Imphal: In a move aimed at addressing the intensifying violence in Manipur, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has deployed 20 additional companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), comprising approximately 2,000 personnel. This deployment comes in response to a series of violent attacks and growing unrest across the state, with orders for airlifting the forces issued late on Tuesday. The new units, drawn from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Border Security Force (BSF), will bolster the existing 198 CAPF companies already stationed in the region. This heightened security presence follows a deadly attack on Monday in Jiribam district, where militants wearing camouflage and armed with advanced weaponry attacked the Borobekra police station and a nearby CRPF camp in Jakuradhor. At least 10 suspected insurgents were killed in the ensuing firefight, and a significant cache of weapons was seized. The recent flare-up is part of a broader pattern of violence in Manipur, which has seen ongoing ethnic clashes since May 2023, resulting in nearly 200 fatalities. The violence has primarily affected the Imphal Valley and surrounding areas, contributing to a fragile law and order situation. Following Monday’s confrontation, reports of clashes between armed groups in the valley have further exacerbated tensions. The additional CAPF units are expected to remain deployed in Manipur at least until November 30, with the possibility of an extension if the situation does not stabilize. The government is closely monitoring developments in the state, where ethnic strife continues to fuel violence and instability.
