Tensions rise in Margherita as the Buddhist community protests Patanjali’s use of Gautam Buddha’s image on incense sticks. The All Assam Buddhist Association demands a ban on such commercial practices, calling it disrespectful.
Guwahati:Tensions escalated in Margherita on Tuesday after incense sticks produced by Patanjali Company Pvt. Ltd. were found featuring images of Gautam Buddha. The Buddhist community has expressed strong disapproval over the commercialization of the revered figure, who symbolizes love, humanity, and compassion.Sashidhar Shyam, General Secretary of the All Assam Buddhist Association’s Tinsukia district committee, criticized the practice, stating that the use of Gautam Buddha’s image for commercial purposes is offensive to the Buddhist faith and its followers. He also highlighted that the image of Buddha has been improperly used on a variety of products such as dustbins, flower pots, wine bars, and even selfie points, which he described as highly disrespectful.The association has demanded an immediate ban on products featuring the image of Gautam Buddha, urging Patanjali and both the Assam and Union governments to take swift action. They warned that if no action is taken, the Buddhist community might be forced to organize large-scale protests in the near future.
