Union Minister Kiren Rijiju critiques Congress’ opposition to the One Nation, One Election bill, questioning their stance on India’s electoral history during Nehru’s tenure.
New Delhi: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has strongly criticized the Congress party for opposing the One Nation, One Election proposal, raising questions about their views on India’s electoral history under former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Speaking to reporters, Rijiju pointed out that India followed a unified election system for two decades after independence, during Nehru’s leadership. He accused the Congress of misusing Article 356, which, according to him, led to the separation of elections for Parliament and state assemblies. Rijiju questioned whether Congress was suggesting that Nehru’s government, which operated under the One Nation, One Election system, was illegal.Additionally, Rijiju took issue with the frequency of elections in the current system, stating that it causes unnecessary disruptions to governance. He asked whether Congress wanted elections to be held continuously for five years, arguing that elections should benefit the nation and not create constant interruptions. The minister stressed that the One Nation, One Election proposal is a critical issue for the entire country, not just any individual or party. He also expressed concerns that Congress would continue to oppose the bill when it is presented in Parliament.
