On the night of December 21-22, 2024, Assam police launched the third phase of their crackdown on child marriage, leading to the arrest of 416 individuals. This move is part of the state’s ongoing commitment to end the practice of underage marriages, a major concern in the region. In addition to the arrests, 335 cases were registered, and the arrested individuals are scheduled to appear in court on December 22.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) to reaffirm the state’s strong stance against this social issue, declaring that the government would continue taking decisive action to eliminate child marriage.
The Dhubri district saw the detention of 68 individuals involved in organizing or facilitating child marriages, with arrests made in areas such as College TOP, Bazar TOP, Gauripur, and Golakganj. This move is part of a larger initiative to eradicate illegal child marriages in Assam, reflecting the government’s serious approach to addressing the problem.
