Nearly 2,000 recruits of the Manipur Police completed their intensive 44-week training at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Assam, aimed at strengthening the force in violence-hit Manipur.
Guwahati : Nearly 2,000 recruits from the Manipur Police successfully completed their 44-week training at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Assam on Monday, marking a significant step in bolstering the state’s police force amidst ongoing security challenges. The ceremony was attended by Assam and Manipur Governors, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, and Manipur Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, who were the chief guests. The training program, which started in January, included a comprehensive regimen designed to prepare recruits for deployment in high-risk environments. While 1,984 individuals began the course, only 1,946 graduated, with some recruits opting out for medical or personal reasons, and two fatalities reported due to health conditions. The Lachit Borphukan Police Academy was chosen for its proven success in training recruits, having already trained nearly 7,000 personnel in the past two years. This year’s training included extensive physical conditioning, endurance tests, and tactical drills. Special attention was paid to unarmed combat, firing skills, and disaster management, given the pressing law and order issues in Manipur. To foster a sense of unity, the recruits underwent national integration training, aimed at building teamwork and mental resilience. In total, the recruits were drawn from nine India Reserve and six Manipur Rifles battalions, with a diverse caste distribution: 62% Meiteis, 12% Kukis, and 26% from Nagas and other tribes.Upon arrival, many recruits were found to have fitness challenges, with 50% being overweight, and five percent classified as obese. By the end of the course, only 5% remained overweight due to chronic health conditions. Despite challenges, including the high percentage of recruits aged between 30-40 years, the new training methods implemented since 2022 were credited with significantly improving the recruits’ readiness. This training program reflects a shift towards modern, scientific methods of policing, with an emphasis on practical skills and physical fitness, designed to better equip the force for the dynamic security needs of the region.
