Tragic Accident Claims Life of Picnic-Goer at Aradonga Spot Near Assam-Meghalaya Border

A 56-year-old man from Guwahati died after slipping into a stream at the Aradonga picnic spot near the Assam-Meghalaya border. His body was discovered by locals on December 23.

Guwahati: A tragic accident occurred at the Aradonga picnic spot near the Assam-Meghalaya border on December 23, resulting in the death of 56-year-old Gautam Ganguly from Guwahati. Ganguly, a resident of Hatat Colony, Rest Camp in Pandu, was part of a picnic group when he lost his life after falling into a stream.Local residents discovered his body in the stream and immediately contacted the authorities. Athiabari Police Outpost in-charge Samuel Sangma responded to the scene, recovered the body, and arranged for a post-mortem examination at Riangdo. According to Sangma, Ganguly slipped while walking near the stream, leading to his fatal fall.The incident occurred while Ganguly was part of a group of around 60 people from Adabari, Guwahati, who had traveled to Aradonga to celebrate a picnic organized by their departmental store. Ganguly had strayed away from the group as preparations for cooking were underway. His body was later found by local residents in the nearby stream.Aradonga, a well-known picnic destination in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills District, attracts numerous visitors during the winter season. The scenic area, with its beautiful landscape of mountains, trees, and streams, is located near Hahim in Assam’s Kamrup District. The Aradonga stream flows into the Singra River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra.Despite continuous safety measures put in place by local authorities, accidents at picnic spots like Aradonga are common, particularly during the festive season, from December to mid-February. Each year, numerous such incidents are reported as thousands of visitors flock to the region’s natural attractions.
