Assam has achieved a 15% reduction in road accidents and fatalities, driven by strict enforcement measures, including a crackdown on drunk driving and enhanced safety initiatives, according to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on December 24 that the state has achieved a significant 15% reduction in both road accidents and fatalities, making it the only major state in India to show such a notable improvement. This decline is attributed to stringent measures introduced after the last review meeting, as confirmed by state officials.During a meeting on road safety, CM Sarma highlighted the critical role of a focused crackdown on drunk driving in reducing accidents. The strict enforcement of the “No Drink and Drive” rule, along with intensified checks after 10 PM in Guwahati, has played a key part in curbing road mishaps. To maintain this progress, Sarma revealed that road safety initiatives will continue through the Magh Bihu festival. The Excise Department has been tasked with adjusting bar timings to better control late-night activities.Acknowledging specific hotspots, authorities are speeding up projects to install streetlights, foot overbridges, and reflective patches along the Guwahati Bypass. The Public Works Department (PWD) is also adding speed breakers, crash barriers, and fluorescent signs to improve road safety. In a bid to increase vehicle visibility, district police chiefs have been directed to install reflective patches on the rear of commercial vehicles. Additionally, widespread road safety campaigns will be launched on social media to increase public awareness.A new initiative will focus on vision testing for commercial drivers, offering corrective solutions for those with impairments. The government is also enhancing emergency medical response by equipping hospitals and medical colleges to handle accident cases more effectively, alongside boosting security for medical staff during emergencies. Moreover, road safety awareness will be promoted through educational videos and dramas at public events, and an SOP is being developed to ensure safety and cleanliness at popular picnic spots across the state.
