Guwahati: The Assam State Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has launched a suo motu inquiry into the death of Congress worker Advocate Mridul Islam, who passed away during the “Raj Bhavan Chalo” protest in Guwahati on December 19, 2024.The protest, organized by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), attracted thousands of participants who were voicing their opposition to various national issues, including the implementation of smart meters, alleged corruption linked to the Adani Group, the ongoing Manipur crisis, and the “One Nation, One Election” proposal.Key Congress leaders such as APCC President Bhupen Borah, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, Working President Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and senior leader Ripun Bora joined the protest. Reports suggest that many protesters, including these leaders, were affected by the use of tear gas to disperse the crowd. The tear gas also caused health issues for three journalists—Amarendra Deka, Raju Bora, and Ajay Sarma—who suffered from dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. They were treated at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).In response to the incident, the AHRC has instructed the District Magistrate of Kamrup (M) and the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati City, to submit detailed reports along with relevant documentation. A review meeting for the case has been scheduled for February 28, 2024.
