Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam’s Chief Minister, slams Congress for politicizing Ambedkar’s legacy, accusing the party of neglecting his contributions while promoting other leaders from the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sharply criticized the Congress party, accusing it of using Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy for political advantage. Sarma pointed out that while the Congress had named numerous schemes and institutions after leaders from the Nehru-Gandhi family, such as the Indira Gandhi Awas Yojana and Rajiv Gandhi schemes, there had been no significant initiative in the name of Ambedkar. He lambasted the party for holding processions in Ambedkar’s name while disregarding his contributions during their governance. “Congress has no shame,” Sarma remarked, citing the party’s historical role in imposing the Emergency, suspending the Constitution, and undermining democracy. According to him, such actions contradicted Congress’s current efforts to glorify Ambedkar.Sarma further questioned Congress’s commitment to Ambedkar’s memory, highlighting the absence of his portrait in Rajiv Bhawan, despite the party’s claims of reverence. He also criticized Congress for not dedicating even a single scheme or institution to Ambedkar, who played a pivotal role in India’s constitutional framework. The Chief Minister also noted the irony in Congress’s sudden focus on Ambedkar, particularly after the party celebrated his Jayanti at the AICC. Sarma emphasized that Ambedkar’s legacy was now being manipulated for political gain, a move he described as a “shameful act” that undermined the true spirit of Ambedkar’s sacrifices and ideology.
