Guwahati : Two youths from Nagaland were arrested near Merapani along the Assam-Nagaland border for carrying illegal drugs, but their subsequent handover to Nagaland police by the CRPF has triggered discontent among local residents.According to initial reports, local residents detained the youths, identified as Ranch Kikon and Chambe, in the Deyalpur area near Merapani police station on Wednesday evening. The duo, reportedly associated with Nagaland police, was found with 333 tablets of the banned drug ‘Simpex’ while traveling on a motorcycle. The CRPF, stationed at the border as a neutral force, intervened and notified the Nagaland police instead of the Assam police, who were also present. The suspects were transferred to Nagaland police custody, sparking anger among the Assamese border community. Residents have raised concerns about jurisdictional issues and the perceived undermining of Assam’s authority within its own territory. Frustration over the handling of the case has fueled calls for clearer protocols and stronger enforcement measures in cross-border law enforcement matters. The incident has intensified the debate over security and governance along the Assam-Nagaland boundary.
