Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway will link the Myanmar border by rail through Manipur and Mizoram.

According to NFR officials, a broad gauge line would be built from Sairang, near Aizawl, to Hmawngbuchhuah in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, close to the Myanmar border.

The final location assessment of the 111 km Imphal-Moreh section is already underway.

The 223-kilometer Sairang-Hmawngbuchhuah railway project had already been canceled due to “economic non-viability.”

C. Lalrosanga, Mizoram’s lone Lok Sabha member, met with NFR officials in Guwahati on Friday, and the railway officials confirmed to the MP that the vital project would be revived.

According to preliminary data, the proposed Sairang-Hmawngbuchhuah railway project will cost Rs 15,000 crore.

Sairang is about 20 km from Mizoram capital Aizawl.

According to a railway official, once built, the proposed new broad gauge line would be of strategic importance and would form an essential section of the proposed Trans-Asian Railway, which would connect India with South East Asia through the train.
