Britain’s Longest-Serving Monarch Passes Away at 96

Guwahati: Queen Elizabeth II, who was “under medical supervision”, passed away at Balmoral, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday. She was 96 years old.

The eldest of Queen Elizabeth II’s four children and former Prince of Wales, Charles (73), becomes king immediately.

In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne and reigned for 70 years.

Following the announcement of her passing by Buckingham Palace, the country observed 10 days of national mourning and paid tributes to her long life and record-breaking reign.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.”
“The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” it added.

She lost her husband Prince Philip of 73 years and the longest-serving consort in British history, in April 2021.

Several world leaders have expressed their condolences over Queen’s passing and referred to it as an “irreparable loss.”
