‘Culture from all walks of life needs to be known’: Centre seeks states’ views on same-sex marriage

New Delhi: The Supreme Court is hearing whether same-sex marriage is legal. The Centre has strongly opposed the policy from the beginning. The government has now sought the opinion of every state on the marriage. The Centre told a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud during the hearing on Wednesday. The Centre had also sought adjournment of the hearing for a few days. However, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition.

On Wednesday, the Central Government filed a fresh petition before the Supreme Court. “This matter belongs to the Law Department,” the plea said. Therefore, the views of the Centre as well as the states on this issue are very important. The Centre is also trying to party states in the case of legalisation of same-sex marriage. The states will have to submit their views on the marriage within the next 10 days.
The Centre said that to verify the legality of same-sex marriage, it is necessary to examine the beliefs, customs and social differences in different parts of the country. While trying this case, there should be a clear and complete understanding of the situation in different parts of the country. That is why we need to know the views of the states. The Centre had also moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the hearing of the case till the states respond. The apex court, however, said it would continue the hearing without responding to the plea.

However, advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the petitioners, said the state had no role in the case. “This case is about the validity of a central law. In that case, what the states think is not relevant at all. Moreover, the date of hearing in the case was announced five months ago. That
