Manipur tense, Assam Rifles withdraw from checkpoint amid public outcry

New Delhi: Manipur is in the grip of caste riots. This time, the paramilitary Assam Rifles is facing public wrath. They were removed from their duties at checkpoints, mainly due to protests by women in May.
An advisory in this regard was issued by the ADGP of Manipur on Monday afternoon. Nine Assam Rifles personnel have been removed from sensitive checkpoints in Bishnupur-Kangboi area and police and CRPF have been deployed, it said. The Assam Rifles was withdrawn from Moirang Lamkhei, an important checkpoint in Bishnupur. Instead, the CRPF was deployed there. The Assam Rifles is controlled by the Union Home Ministry.

On Monday, the women came together against the Assam Rifles. Hundreds of women protested on several streets and at various places. There have been demands to withdraw the Assam Rifles from Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Bishnupur and Kakching districts. Manipur Police for the last three months
