Two Himalayan states devastated by landslide, two killed in house collapse near Joshimath

New Delhi: On one side is cloudburst, on the other side is a landslide. Since Sunday night, nature has been showing its ‘destruction’ in the two Himalayan states. On Tuesday, residents of Helang village near Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district collapsed and were buried under it. At the time of filing this report, three people have been rescued from the spot. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital after rescue operations by the state disaster response force.


The incident took place at Helang village between Pipalkoti and Joshimath on Badrinath road on Tuesday evening. According to police, the workers involved in the excavation along the Alaknanda river were inside the two-storey house. The house collapsed due to a sudden collapse and the staff were trapped under it. The State Disaster Response Force rushed to the spot as soon as the information was received.
Himachal Pradesh was also not spared from the collapse. Four houses collapsed in Krishnanagar area of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh around 5.30 pm on Tuesday. Two people died after being buried under the debris. It is feared that at least five to 10 people are still trapped. The state disaster response force is still carrying out rescue operations.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu rushed to the spot as soon as he received the news. He also ordered the evacuation of the area. Taking note of the situation in the state, the Chief Minister has ordered the closure of all schools and colleges on Wednesday.
