Shashi Tharoor to file nomination for post of Congress President on Sept 30

Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor will file a nomination for the post of party President on September 30, as per sources. 

He will approach delegates from different states because he has five sets of nomination papers, and he will require 50 delegates to propose his candidacy, according to Tharoor.

After Sonia Gandhi defeated Jitendra Prasad in 1998, the Congress will have a non-Gandhi leader for the first time in 25 years.

The last time the party had a non-Gandhi chief was in 1996 when Sitaram Kesri defeated Sharad Pawar and Rajesh Pilot.

Madhusudan Mistri, the chairman of the Central Election Authority, will be present at Congress’s national headquarters to take nomination paper as returning officer of the election.

As per the notification released by the Congress Party, the aforesaid elections for the party’s new president are scheduled to take place on October 17 at all PCCs.  

The results will be publicly disclosed on October 19 right after the results of the vote counting.

On October 8, at 5:00 p.m., the complete list of candidates will be made public.

Mistry has urged the Congress Party’s delegates to choose the president of the Indian National Congress in accordance with the guidelines established by Article 18.
