J&K DGP prisons found murdered, domestic help arrested

Guwahati: The Director General of Police of Jammu and Kashmir Prisons Department, Hemant Kumar Lohia, was found dead at his residence in Jammu under mysterious circumstances on Monday.

The prime suspect in the case, who was untraceable has been taken into custody, the official said.

A 23-year-old domestic help was identified as Yasir Ahmed and he was hired six months ago, officially stated.

He was taken into custody after a massive man-hunt was launched by the police.

However, Ahmed was on the run after the murder.

Meanwhile, officials said that their investigations till now do not point at any terror link.

“An accused diary has also been found, which reflects his depressed mental state. Further investigation is on”, officially added.

Lohia was murdered at a friend’s house on the outskirts of Jammu, where he had been staying with his family while his own home was being renovated.

A native of Assam, 57-year-old Lohia was a 1992 batch IPS office. He was posted as the DGP (Prisons) in August.

The preliminary investigation of the crime scene, according to the officials, reveals that this as a suspected a murder case. He was found dead with throat slit and burn injuries.

The murder surfaced on a day Union Home Minister Amit Shah began a three-day visit to the Union Territory.

Taking to Twitter, Assam police offered condolence to the bereaved family. “We are saddened beyond words to hear of the passing of Sh. Hemant Lohia, IPS, Director General (Prisons) J&K, a worthy son of Assam. Our heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends as well as @JmuKmrPolice in this hour of grief”, Assam police tweeted.
