Foreign Cigarettes worth Rs 2.71 Cr seized in Mizoram, 1 apprehended

The Assam Rifles on Sunday seized a sizable amount of cigarettes of foreign origin worth Rs. 2.71 crores in the Champhai district of Mizoram.

In the Zotlang area of Mizoram, the Sercchip Battalion of the 23 Sector Assam Rifles and the Mizoram Custom Preventive Force carried out a joint operation under the supervision of the Inspector General of the Assam Rifles (East) and seized 209 cases of cigarettes of foreign origin valued at Rs. 2,71,70,000.

In connection to the seizure, one person was apprehended.

The Assam Rifles team recovered the items that were dumped in the Zotlang area, according to a senior Assam Rifles official.
The recovered foreign-origin cigarette is estimated to have cost Rs. 2,71,70,000.

The seized items and apprehended individual has been handed over to the Customs department, Champhai for further legal proceedings.

The ongoing smuggling of foreign-origin cigarettes is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the India-Myanmar Border. (ANI)
