Mallikarjun Kharge is all set to take charge as the first non-Gandhi president of the Indian National Congress in nearly two and a half decades today.

Kharge secured the top post defeating party MP Shashi Tharoor by a huge margin at the presidential election held last week.

Kharge got 7,897 votes in the presidential contest while his opponent Tharoor received 1,072 votes.

He will be replacing senior leader Sonia Gandhi as the Congress chief.

Kharge paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi this morning at Rajghat in Delhi.

All Congress Working Committee members, MPs, Pradesh Congress Committee presidents, CLP leaders, former CMs, former State presidents, and other AICC office bearers are invited to the programme.

Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, two key members of the Congress, are expected to be at the event.

Rahul will be arriving in Delhi after a three-day break from his Bharat Jodo Yatra, which runs from October 24 to 26.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Tuesday said that he would also be presented at the event.
