New Delhi: According to some health scientists, it is possible to know how much a person is at risk of developing a stroke if the blood group is known. An article published in the medical journal Neurology highlights this issue. In that article, researchers at the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine (UMSOM) in the US claim that having group ‘A’ blood in people under the age of 60 is the highest risk of stroke.
On the other hand, those who have a blood group ‘O’, are at the lowest risk. The researchers tested 48 variants of the gene on about 17,000 patients with stroke. All participants ranged in age from 18 to 59 years. It found that people under the age of 60 who have a blood group ‘A’ are 16 per cent more likely to suffer a stroke. On the other hand, the risk of stroke is 12 per cent lower for the ‘O’ group.
