Guwahati: Amidst concerns about rising prices of essential goods, a recent investigation has shed light on an another trend. While retail markets have witnessed price hikes, wholesale markets have remained relatively stable. This comes as reports circulated about sudden increases in prices for staples like rice, cooking oil, and other essential commdities.
While our journalist embarked on an inquiry, visiting Guwahati’s wholesale market. Traders in the market revealed that prices of goods have largely maintained consistency over the past few months. Variations have been marginal, with a trader noting slight fluctuations of two to four rupees. For instance, standard prices for cooking oil range from Rs. 115 to Rs. 140-150.
Another trader shared that rice prices range from 900 to 1200 rupees for a 26 kg bag, and the cost of cooking oil remains at Rs. 135 per liter. He emphasized that these prices have not significantly changed.
While some retailers admitted recent price increases in certain items like rice, others pointed to differences in rice prices, particularly which are produced in the state. A fraction of retailers acknowledged raising prices for items like cooking oil and lentils.
On the other hand, a post by Dhrubajyoti Morol from the Bharatiya Janata Party highlighted the role of misinformation in the perception of price hikes. He also hinted at media accountability in this matter.
Meanwhile, the state’s supply department has not yet addressed the rising price concerns. The lack of response from the food and civil supplies department has raised questions about its role in overseeing pricing regulations. The situation underscores the need for clarity and proactive measures to address the evolving market dynamics.
