North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) sets up a committee to draft an internal report addressing allegations of mismanagement and administrative issues, following ongoing student protests and hunger strikes.

Guwahati:I In response to growing concerns over alleged administrative mismanagement, Meghalaya’s North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has formed a committee tasked with drafting an internal report for submission to the Ministry of Education. This move comes shortly after the Union Ministry decided to set up its own committee to investigate the issues raised by students and other stakeholders. The NEHU committee, which will oversee the preparation of the internal report, includes representatives from the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) – NEHU unit, senior faculty members, and other key stakeholders. The committee will be led by Lakhon Kma, the president of NEHUTA, as its Chairman. The decision was formalized in an official order issued by NEHU on November 14, following mounting pressure from students and various student organizations. The Union Ministry’s intervention was prompted by “serious concerns raised by students, student associations, and media reports” regarding the functioning of the university.Protests at NEHU have intensified in recent weeks, with students continuing an indefinite hunger strike that entered its 14th day on November 18. The protesting students are demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Shukla, the removal of the Registrar, and other administrative changes. Earlier, the students had locked down the university on November 6, further escalating tensions. The formation of this committee underscores the university’s efforts to address the issues while also complying with the Union Ministry’s directive to investigate the allegations of mismanagement and ensure accountability.
