Guwahati: In a bid to address increasing road accidents linked to foggy conditions and the approaching picnic season, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a comprehensive 45-day mission-mode road safety campaign. The campaign, which will run from December 15, 2024, to January 31, 2025, aims to reduce road accidents through a combination of preventive measures and heightened vigilance across the state.A hybrid meeting led by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota and attended by top officials including Director General of Police (DGP) G.P. Singh, Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), and District Transport Officers (DTOs) reviewed strategies for ensuring road safety. DGP Singh stressed the irreplaceable value of human life and called for coordinated efforts from various departments, including Transport, Health, Police, and Public Works, to prevent accidents.Key directives from the meeting include:Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for handling fog-related hazards and managing the influx of picnickers.Portable hazard blinkers to be installed at high-risk areas.Reflective materials such as retro-reflective tapes on trees and poles to enhance visibility.Mandatory reflective hazard triangles for vehicles parked in low-visibility zones.Real-time weather updates via WhatsApp for drivers and the public.Identifying picnic spots and ensuring adequate readiness and safety measures.Infrastructure improvements at accident-prone zones, including better signage and road maintenance.Strict enforcement against illegal liquor sales and the prohibition of alcohol for drivers transporting picnickers.Breathalyser checkpoints near tourist areas and hotels to curb drunk driving.Emergency medical support with ambulances stationed at strategic points for immediate response.With these measures in place, the state government is determined to minimize road accidents during this critical period and ensure the safety of commuters and holidaymakers alike.
