We must continue their fight to protect the security of India.” He also highlighted that Assam had become an important hub in the Northeast due to such struggles.Sonowal also took to social media to honor the martyrs, particularly on the martyrdom day of Khargeswar Talukdar, the first martyr of the Assam Movement. “The Assam Movement was a significant struggle for protecting the Assamese identity and is an integral part of India’s modern history,” he posted.December 10 is observed as Swahid Diwas each year, to honor the martyrs who gave their lives during the civil disobedience movement led by the Assam Students Union (ASU) and All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AASGP) between 1979 and 1985, protesting against illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh. The movement culminated in the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985 by then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, which ensured safeguards for the Assamese people’s cultural, social, and linguistic identity.Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also shared his tribute on social media, emphasizing the people’s struggle during the movement. He mentioned that the Assam government is constructing the Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati to honor the martyrs’ sacrifice. “The people of Assam gave their lives for the protection of Aai Asomi (Mother Assam). On this day, we remember all those who fought and died for the cause,” Sarma wrote.
