Assam Minister Atul Bora Calls for Stronger Action Against Hindu Persecution in Bangladesh and Urges Border Security Improvements
Assam Minister Atul Bora voices concerns over the persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh, calls for better border security, and emphasizes the implementation of the Assam Accord’s provisions under the Modi government.
Guwahati: On Tuesday, Assam Minister Atul Bora expressed deep concern over the persecution of Hindus in neighboring Bangladesh and called for urgent action to address this issue. Bora, who also serves as the president of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), stressed the importance of securing the Indo-Bangladesh border to prevent infiltration and safeguard the region’s stability.In an interview with ANI, Bora recalled the sacrifices made by India during Bangladesh’s liberation war, stating that the contributions of the nation should never be forgotten. He highlighted the recent distressing reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh and expressed hope that diplomatic efforts would lead to a resolution of the situation.“The incidents happening in Bangladesh against Hindus are unfortunate. Our senior official has visited Bangladesh, and I believe the matter will be resolved soon,” Bora said, urging the international community to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting minority rights.Bora also emphasized the need to strengthen border security in Assam, a region long affected by issues related to infiltration, particularly during the Assam Movement. He pointed to ongoing border fencing projects as essential steps toward securing the state’s frontiers.Reflecting on the Assam Accord, Bora criticized past governments for not fully implementing its provisions, while praising the steps taken under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership to address these concerns. “After Modi became Prime Minister, a high-level committee under Justice (Retd) Biplab Sharma was formed to ensure the implementation of the Assam Accord. The state government is committed to fulfilling the committee’s recommendations,” he stated.Bora accused the Congress party of compromising border security for political advantage, contrasting it with the current government’s efforts to safeguard Assam’s borders.On the occasion of Swahid Divas (Martyrs Day), which honors the 860 lives lost during the Assam Movement, Bora paid tribute to the martyrs and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to their families. A special program was held at Swahid Smarak Park in Boragaon, attended by several ministers, where Bora also unveiled plans for a new memorial park. “The Swahid Smarak Udyan at Pachim Boragaon is in its first phase, with plans for an auditorium, light-and-sound system, and a cycle track,” Bora announced, stating that the project would be completed by next year.In conclusion, Bora reiterated his tribute to the martyrs, whose sacrifices continue to inspire the ongoing efforts for Assam’s development and security.
