Mizoram: Aizawl DDM advises people not to venture close to rivers
In light of a possible cyclone that is predicted to hit the adjacent southeast bay of Bengal from Monday, the Aizawl district disaster management authority cautioned people on Sunday not to venture into rivers or other water areas for the next three days.
Based on a special tropical weather outlook published by The India Meteorological Department, Mizoram’s state meteorological centre also issued a cyclone and heavy rainfall warning on Saturday (IDM).
A deep depression over Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm “Sitrang”, the Indian Meteorological Department, said yesterday.
The cyclone, named Sitrang by Thailand, will reach the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast on Tuesday.
A “red alert” has also been issued for Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur.
According to the state meteorological centre, some areas of Mizoram are anticipated to experience heavy to extremely severe rains on Monday.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the state is also anticipated to endure extremely severe rain.
The Aizawl district management authority issued advice requesting people not to venture out into river and water areas on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
It advised residents to secure their homes in order to withstand storms and torrential rain.
It instructed them to chop down any weak trees, branches, or bamboo close to their surroundings and remove any nullah (drainage) that was within their reach. It also instructed them to cover any landslide-prone locations with tarps.
In light of the potential cyclonic storm, the district disaster management authorities also urged residents not to propagate false information or misinformation.
