A 64-year-old man was arrested in Chirang district after a raid by forest officials uncovered tiger bones, teeth, and deer horns, raising concerns over wildlife poaching and trafficking in Assam.
Guwahati: A 64-year-old man was arrested on Saturday night in Chirang district’s Jharbishpani, Bijni, following a forest department raid that led to the discovery of various wild animal parts, including tiger bones, teeth, and deer horns. The accused, Basudev Roy, was apprehended at his home during the operation carried out by the Panbari forest office team. Acting on a tip-off, officials raided his property and seized the illegal wildlife contraband.Authorities suspect that the recovered animal parts may be connected to illegal poaching and trafficking networks. A senior forest official stated, “We are investigating the origin of these items and the potential buyers. Further questioning of the accused is ongoing.”This seizure underscores the growing problem of wildlife trafficking in the region, particularly targeting endangered species like tigers. In response, authorities have ramped up efforts to combat such illegal activities to protect the biodiversity of Assam.
