Meghalaya courts reject 80% of drug-related charge-sheets: DGP
In Meghalaya, the courts reject 80% of the charge sheets that the police submit in drug-related crimes.
This was informed by the Director General of the Meghalaya Police, LR Bishnoi.
According to Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi, the courts reject 80% of drug-related charge sheets since they don’t follow the criteria of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The Meghalaya DGP raised concerns about “procedural lapses” and said that investigating officers (IO) are receiving the necessary training to ensure that they adhere to the NDPS Act norms when filing charge sheets in drug-related cases.
The Meghalaya DGP continued by noting that in the past 4 months, 134 traffickers had been arrested in 48 cases registered so far, and more than Rs 18 crore worth of drugs had been seized by the state police.
He stated that among the substances found were 11.902 amphetamine tablets, 3.62 kg of heroin, 4.500 kg of ganja, 150 mg of opium, and 145 bottles of cough syrup.
According to him, 123 of the 134 drug dealers are from Meghalaya while 11 are from neighbouring states, including Assam, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The Meghalaya DGP stated that during that time, 31 vehicles, 90 mobile phones, and Rs 24.22 lakh in cash were also seized.
