New Delhi: IIT Kharagpur was closed during the pandemic except the main gate. Later, when the situation became normal, the rest of the gate was opened, but the gate adjacent to Prembazar was closed. The professors sat on the road in front of the gate demanding that the gate be opened immediately.

Employees and retired employees of the institute also joined the unprecedented protest by the professors. Together, they sat on the street in front of the gate and protested. Professors at IIT Kharagpur explain why they are protesting. The IIT has been cut off from the society area due to the closure of the gate towards Prembazar. Many retired professors and staff live in this Prembazar Society area. In addition, maids and gardeners working in the accommodation of IIT professors come from these areas. They have to reach the professors’ residences on the way. As a result, many people do not even want to come back to work.

On Sunday, the professors sat on a sit-in in front of the Prembazar gate demanding that the gate be opened for nearly two years. The secretary of the organization, Professor Karbi Biswas of the Department of Electrical Engineering, said, “We took a symbolic stand demanding the opening of the gate. The excuse for the security of the authorities is baseless. When did the situation return to normal? Why is the gate still open? We are moving towards forming a joint committee. After that, if the gate does not open, we will stay continuously. ‘
