‘We are not against EVMs, but…’ Congress says

New Delhi: The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Wednesday took a dig at the Opposition over the use of EVMs. After this, the Congress softened the tone on EVMs. Jairam Ramesh , said , “NEITHER THE CONGRESS NOR THE INDIA ALLIANCE IS AGAINST EVMs. But the way EVMs are being ‘manipulated’ is against it. ’

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “In the India coalition meeting last December, we discussed this with all parties. We are not against EVMs. We are not against electronic voting machines, we are against electronic voting manipulation. Jairam Ramesh made it clear that the India coalition is not seeking a fresh ballot. They demanded that VVPATs should be used in 100 per cent booths. ”After the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had raised questions about EVMs. Until recently, the opposition had been demanding the return of ballots instead of EVMs. But after the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, Jairam Ramesh suddenly changed his tune. The reason for softening this tone is probably the sarcasm of the Election Commissioner. “Adhuri hasrato ka ilzaam har baar hum par lagana theek nahi, bafa khud se nahi hoti khata EVM ki kahte ho,” Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said while announcing the poll on Saturday. In other words, it is not right to accuse EVMs because of their unfulfilled will. It is unfair to attack EVMs because of lack of faith in oneself.
However, not only EVMs, the Congress also slammed the BJP on the issue of electoral bonds. Jairam Ramesh said, “Chanda do, dhanda lo, this is the BJP’s policy. How can a company with a profit of Rs 20 crore buy bonds worth Rs 400 crore? This is nothing but financial embezzlement. On the one hand, our account is closed, on the other hand, they are taking their own bonds. This is a financial surgical strike on Congress. ”
